Talking of Eagles
On Sept 29th we met again after our Summer break, and it was so good to catch up with old friends and new. Numbers were down a bit with some of our regulars away on holiday, but it was refreshing to gather again and worship together. Rupert Clark Lewis began his talk with a wonderful story of a caged eagle that had been freed from it’s enclosure, but seemed to have lost the knowledge of how to fly, until it heard the cry of a wild eagle calling from above. As Rupert said, ‘It’s one thing to get the bird out of the cage, but another thing to get the cage out of the bird.” How often do we experience the truth that Christ has set us free, but for one reason or another we haven’t yet learned to walk and even fly into that freedom which is ours if only we’d realise it. One of the key reasons for the Filling Station is to help us all grow into and experience the freedom which is ours in Christ.
Having said that, our next meeting has a slightly different focus. Rather than focus on building up Christians, what we are planning in October is a more light hearted evening which will be a great opportunity to introduce friends and family who may not be as convinced in their faith, to come and hear a Christian comedian. Ian MacDonald has ministered for many years within the Anglican denomination, particularly in the area of youth ministry and discipleship, but has now embarked on a new career as a stand up comedian. He is gaining quite a reputation in this area, having performed this year at the Edingburgh Festival, and other notable venues. On Friday Oct 27th he will be performing his very own comic routine, as well as being interviewed about his Christian faith. We will still have a time of worship followed by prayer ministry, but this is a great opportunity for people to meet a professional comedian who has a very real Christian faith.
