June’s Filling Station… God our Strength, our Rock, our Fortress and our Deliverer
The new-ish Bishop of Hereford the Rt Revd Richard Jackson spoke at the Filling Station from Psalm 18. Listen again on the Abbeydore Deanery YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOk0g3J0Q54 For some years, David was in a difficult situation and when he wrote this psalm, was completely reliant on God. Bishop Richard told us how he’d once heard David Parker speaking at New Wine, say, when we look at the world around us, all that’s going on, and the stars above and how small we are, we can feel insecure. We may bolster our insecurity by arrogance… money, possessions, and other false means of comfort. This is a very unstable way of keeping our psychological equilibrium… our dependence on things can be overturned and we find ourselves in the depths of insecurity again. Jesus invites us to flip thing on their head… to replace insecurity with confidence in Jesus Christ, confidence that Jesus has died for us, confidence that in all things God is working for our good, confidence that we are called, loved more we can possibly imagine, and that whatever circumstances are thrown at us, know that we have eternity with Jesus. As we flip this see-saw over we find our equilibrium has become secure. David discovered that God protected him from the assaults of the enemy, and this is true for us too, we will never ultimately be overcome. And that God delivered David and many of us have stories of God’s dramatic intervention in our lives. But sometimes as we were reminded in Hebrews 11, we won’t always see our deliverance in this life but that we know we will spend eternity with Him. And during this time, many people are longing to know God as their Strength, their Rock, their Fortress and their Deliverer and God the Holy Spirit has gone ahead of us… we may find ourselves out of our comfort zone but we can totally rely on God as He leads us into situations and to people who are searching for Him.
